The Artist...
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, I received my BFA in
Fine Art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. 3 months after
graduating I co-founded Engine 22 Studios in downtown Cincinnati,
and artist’s space with 12 individual studios, which
I rehabbed and managed. In the span of 2 and a half years
I participated in 23 group shows, 3 auctions and was invited
back to the AAC as a guest speaker to the senior class. In
2005 I began my Masters Degree courses at Maryland Institute
College of Art and graduated with a degree in painting on
May 14th, 2007 and currently live and work Washington, DC.
Artist Statement...
The
grass
is always greener on the other side of the fence. This was
the mentality I had growing up in the suburbs. When I got
older I moved into the city and made a startling discovery;
there
is no grass there. My work is heavily influenced by my lifelong
infatuation with city life. Graphic, urban-inspired portraits
speak to the tension between the hip, public persona these
figures portray and their true vulnerability that they try
to conceal.
In retrospect,
my work began as formalist paintings that relied heavily on
technique. Today I see them as technical paintings that are
driven strongly by ideas. I feel like I am not an individual,
but rather a member of a greater society. The other people
in this society act as my muses and my paintings are a reflection
of us.
